The town of Big Timber was founding in 1883 when the Northern Pacific Railroad came through the area. Originally this town was named Dornix! But after a short amount of time, the town was moved to higher ground, and was renamed Bug Timber for the large cottonwood trees that could be found on both the Yellowstone and the Boulder Rivers. At one point in time Big Timber shipped more wool than any other city on the untied states.
